The Coastal Garden

The aim of the design for this south-facing Bude property was to create a restful haven that subtly captured the essence of the surrounding natural coastal and country environment, even in the absence of a direct sea view.

The design focuses on sensory elements, architectural harmony, and creating space for leisure and relaxation.

Some key design features included:

  • Use of Space: Stepping stone paths and focal points were used to create a sense of flow and discovery, an invitation to explore the garden. A multi-functional seating and dining area was positioned to celebrate the south-facing aspect.

  • Architectural Harmony: Existing paving was retained to reduce the carbon footprint of the design, and complemented by introducing contrasting pavers that intentionally mirrored the lines of the home's timber cladding.

  • Sympathetic Integration: The design incorporated existing features at the client’s request, including recreational lawn space and a timber deck, seamlessly weaving them into the new, elevated design.

  • Atmospheric Boundaries: To create an illusion of depth and allow the garden's natural elements to take centre stage, the perimeter fencing was treated in a dark charcoal grey.

  • Sensory Focus: A bespoke granite globe water feature, visible from inside the house, acts as a focal point, providing the soothing sound of moving water - a nod to the nearby Cornish coast and local stone. The planting design included ornamental grasses to rustle in the wind and soft foliage to brush past.

Through the thoughtful use of space, texture, and sound, the design aims to capture a little of the wild beauty of the Cornish coast within an enclosed space, whilst retaining the practical functionality the client required.
