Garden Design Services
Whether you're planning a complete garden transformation, or require a bespoke pollinator-friendly planting scheme for an existing garden border, I'd love to help.
I offer the full range of landscape and garden design services as defined by the Joint Council of Landscape Industries. I’ve provided more detailed information below about:
I typically take on projects across Devon and Cornwall, but I’m happy to consider projects further afield. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries!
Start with a Garden Design Consultation
After a brief initial video or phone call, regardless of the services you require, an onsite consultation is essential. This provides an opportunity for us to discuss your ideas and requirements in the context of your unique garden.
Every site is individually shaped by factors such as aspect, microclimate, soil, surroundings, and history and there is no substitute for experiencing this first-hand.
If you are considering proceeding to a garden redesign following your consultation, I will prepare a brief feasibility statement including a fee proposal at no additional charge to help inform your decision.
If your project is more complex, this consultation period can be extended e.g. to include further site analysis and options appraisals.
I can support you to involve other professionals such as surveyors if required. A professional topographical survey is required for most garden design projects as it allows us to map out and analyse the space we have to work with accurately.
Looking for a Garden Redesign?
It may help to think of employing a garden designer like employing an architect. Some clients will request a full package of services through to project completion and beyond, others only require a concept design to get them started. Some like to be closely involved, others prefer to take a back seat. Some have a clear timeline, others like to spread the design process over several years. I work flexibly tailoring packages to meet your needs.
Step 1. Concept Design
The initial consultation provides all the information we need to proceed to the next step. Once the design brief has been finalised, the aim is to create a concept design package to give you an idea of what the finished project will look like.
You will be provided with a concept master plan and supporting mood board/s and perspective drawings. I provide drawings created using the latest computer aided design (CAD) and specialist rendering software as standard.
I can also provide 3D computer model animations and interactive files to help you get a feel for what is being proposed if required.
Step 2. Detailed Design
This is where the concept becomes a buildable reality. This can include the creation of the entire package of documents and drawings required by a contractor to complete your project accurately and efficiently.
Depending on your needs, this can include the detailing for; landscaping (e.g. specifications and layout plans), construction (e.g. construction drawings), and planting (e.g. planting plans and schedules).
I can also support you to secure any necessary permissions to ensure your project can go ahead, e.g. planning permission if required. I will be happy to help you navigate Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements.
Step 3. Design Realisation
This is the building phase, making your vision a reality. Depending on your needs, this can involve; assisting you to fulfil your responsibilities under the CDM 2015 regulations and to appoint a contractor to physically build your garden (the tendering process), monitoring progress (overseeing the work) and liaising with the contractor/s on your behalf, and other project administration duties.
Alternatively, if you’d like to be more hands on, I am happy to be consulted as and when needed at this stage.
I am a registered Animal and Plant Health Agency Plant Health Professional Operator which means I can also source and supply plants for you when required.
Bespoke Planting Design for Existing Spaces Required?
Whilst planting design services can be part of a garden redesign (see Step 2. Detailed Design Services above), I am also happy to provide planting plans and schedules together with aftercare advice, for any existing beds and borders you may have.
This is a popular choice for keen gardeners who want professional guidance on what to plant where, particularly for wildlife-friendly and naturalistic schemes.

Would you like Bespoke Design Follow-up Services?
Whether I’ve provided a planting scheme for an existing space, or supported you through the complete garden redesign process, I can provide management and development recommendations to ensure your project looks and functions at its best as time goes on.
This is particularly valuable for wildlife gardens where the ecosystem evolves in wonderful and sometimes unexpected ways over time.
This can be tailored to meet your needs. You may just want some brief written guidance in response to specific questions, or you may prefer site visits after your project has been completed. Perhaps you will have thought of a new project we can work on together!
